What is the March Birthstone?

Who else is ready for winter to be over? 🙋‍♀️

March is here, and now is the perfect time to showcase the birthstones for this month: aquamarine and bloodstone.

Let’s take a look!

The March Birthstone: Aquamarine and Bloodstone

March Zodiac: Pisces + Aries

Depending on when the day lands, the zodiac sign for March falls under one of two zodiac signs. First up, we have the water sign Pisces (Feb. 19-Mar. 20) who are said to have a strong creative disposition, strong sense of empathy, and a laid back attitude. The second belongs to the fire sign Aires (Mar 20-Apr 21 ) who are often natural born leaders, and unite others through their good energy and drive.

In the northern hemisphere, March represents life and brings with it the end of winter and the promise of spring.

Personally, I can’t wait. Berlin is home to short, dark winter days, and is almost always gray and gloomy. I can normally head off the usual gloom by taking a trip Stateside to visit family, getting some much needed California sun, and embarking on my annual buying trip in the desert at the Tucson Gem Show. Unfortunately, the worldwide pandemic postponed my usual travel plans and I had to stay put this winter, which means I’m much more excited for spring this year!

It’s a welcome change and is a favorite time of year for many. So what would make this time of year even more special?

Celebrating a birthday, of course!

When you’re looking for birthstone gifts for those March babies in your life, you’ll find that there are two birthstones to consider: aquamarine and bloodstone.

Let’s take a closer look at these beautiful stones.

What is Bloodstone?

Bloodstone features a dark green shade with striking deep red spots, and is also known by the name heliotrope.

It’s a relatively abundant stone that can be found all over the globe, and was commonly associated with blood in many parts of the world. For example, medieval Christians believed the deep flecks of red represented the blood of Christ and used the stone in artistic depictions of the the crucifixion, while the Aztecs used it for medicinal purposes to cleanse the blood.

I don’t personally see a lot of bloodstone in jewelry, and I don’t currently have anything available for purchase. More often, this stone is used in crystal healing or meditation practices as  a tool for setting intentions.

Bloodstone is said to be a powerful tool for cleansing, inspiring courage, and is said to promote flexibility and strategic thinking.

What is Aquamarine?

Aquamarine is a popular gemstone in the beryl family featuring a beautiful blue green shade that evokes dreams of shimmering blue waters and sunshine.

This popular gemstone is a member of the beryl family, and is the blue green variant of the stone.  It’s said to be a soothing stone, has the potential to relieve stress, soothe anxiety, and bring inner peace.

Associated with good fortune in marriage, aquamarine was often used as a center stone for engagement rings before the popularity of the diamond.

It’s a favorite among crystal lovers and jewelry enthusiasts alike, and can be found in colors ranging from the deep greenish blue to a bright and vibrant blue green. Ranging in clarity from crystal clear, to translucent to opaque, the most prized aquamarine gemstones showcasing clarity and hues more towards the blue end of the spectrum.
