ZKD Gold Jewelry + Care
Zurina Ketola demi-fine jewelry features a range of gold options, including 14K gold fill, 16K gold plate, and gold tone materials . Below is a little more information on the type of gold you’ll find in our designs, along with the best way to care for each item to keep it looking new for years to come!
14K Gold Fill (US) | 585 Gold Fill (EU)
Gold fill is made using a layer of solid gold which is pressure bonded to a base metal, most often brass. Gold fill products are 5% gold by weight. You’ll find 14K gold fill materials in our handcrafted ear wires, ear cuffs, wire wrapped gemstone drops and links, and chains.
We choose 14K gold fill because of its affordability and durability. Gold fill wears much the same way as solid gold does, making it a good choice if you have metal allergies and want affordable, stylish jewelry options that are still high quality. Gold fill jewelry can be worn in the shower or bath, although we recommend taking off necklaces as dirt and oils can collect in small crevices of the chain. Even with regular use and daily wear, if properly taken care of, your gold filled jewelry can last for decades.
In 2020, we’ve switched to using 14K gold fill wire that is made from ethically sourced gold to craft ear wires, post earrings, hoop earrings, ear cuffs, wire wrapped gemstones, links and basic components which are crafted by hand in our studios.
How to Clean and Store Gold Fill Jewelry
Gold filled jewelry should never be cleaned with abrasive cleaners, polishes or jewelry cloths. Although gold fill is considered quite durable, these types of cleaners will remove the surface over time, and will shorten the life of your gold fill jewelry.
Only use jewelry cleaners that are non-abrasive liquids. Often these cleaners will specifically state that they are approved for alternative metals or costume jewelry. These types of cleaners can unfortunately be difficult to find, and if it is unavailable to you, you can also use mild dish soap, water, and a clean, soft cloth.
You will need:
- 2-3 drops Dawn liquid dish detergent, or similar mild liquid detergent
- 1/2 cup water
- bowl + spoon
- soft, clean cloth
DIRECTIONS
- Add a few drops of mild dish soap to a bowl of water, and mix until you see some bubbles.
- Place your jewelry in for a few minutes.
- Remove, use cloth to wipe dry.
16K Gold Plate
Gold plating is a chemical process that binds a layer of gold particles to a metal surface, typically brass. Compared to gold fill, gold plating is not as thick or durable of a finish and will wear off over time. Not recommended for individuals with metal allergies, and not recommended for wearing in water.
In recent years, we’ve discovered more durable options that include thicker plating and include anti-tarnish finishes for better durability and longer wear.

Sterling silver is a mix of metals consisting of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% other metal, often copper. Pure silver is a relatively soft metal and can be easily scratched and dented. Fine Silver / 99.9%
Fine silver is a relatively soft metal, and isn’t suitable for all jewelry, however, works well as details such as pendants, beads, and small components. I often use fine silver focal pieces with a sterling silver clasp and details.
