DIY – Sculptural Jewelry Tree Display

Here’s a little DIY tutorial on how to make on of my favorite sculptural jewelry displays, the jewelry tree. I’ve been making variations of this for years. It’s great because you can always do something a little different each time to change it up. Let’s get started!

Here’s a list of the items that you’ll need to get started:

  • Branch – Either plucked from nature, or from your favorite local craft store. It’s ideal to have a branch with many smaller branches sticking out to the sides rather than up. The more smaller branches you have, the more jewelry you can display!
  • Container – You’ll want something that is at least six to eight inches tall, with a base that is at least four or five inches. Basically, you’re looking for something that won’t topple over. I’m using a pretty white pot that I got from Ikea a million years ago. Another good bet? Anything clear, especially if you want to see the pretty rocks and stones that will end up at the base.
  • Decorative Stones/Glass – River rocks are a popular choice,  but any kind of heavy decorative stone or glass will work. I found these cool cube-ish glass stones at Z Gallerie a long time ago.

Now that we have all our supplies, let’s get started!

:|: STEP ONE :|: Place your branch in the in the middle of the container, and hold in place with one hand.

Hold brach as straight as possible for best results.

:|: STEP TWO :|: Add a single layer of rocks to the bottom of the container.

Be sure to fill slowly…

:|: STEP THREE :|: Continue to hold the branch in one hand, and slowly add more rocks. Be sure your branch stays straight, and in the middle of the container. This will keep your finished piece from leaning over to one side too much.

Arrange the top stones to perfection…

:|: STEP FOUR :|: Fill the container to the top. Once you have added enough rocks go ahead and arrange the top layer if necessary.

You’re done!

:|: STEP FIVE :|: Viola! You’re done. Now go forth and add some jewelry. Below you’ll see some shots of mine.

I’ve done this many times, and have always gotten great results. It’s really fun to play around and and try new combinations. I hope it works out for you, and I hope you liked the tutorial! I’d love to hear what you think.
