The Life and Lore of Prasiolite
Prasiolite is a variety of clear green quartz, and is a relatively new and unique gemstone found in my handmade jewelry. Prasiolite ranges in color from a fresh, cool green to deeper hues of green. Also known as green amethyst, lime citrine, and veramine, prasiolite is quite coveted by gemstone and jewelry collectors alike. Rarely found in nature, most prasiolite available on the market today is made by heat treating amethyst that is mined in very particular regions of the world. I tend to look for the clear, high quality prasiolite with meticulous and unique cuts to be used in my jewelry designs.
Like many other gemstones, the name prasiolite is derived from Greek language. The first half, “prason”, translates to leek, which correlates to the green color of the gem, while the last half, “lithos”, means stone. While there are no astrological associations with prasiolite, its mythology and lore suggests that prasiolite promotes prosperity with its ability to strengthen the mind, emotions and will.
Due to its green color, prasiolite is also linked to the 4th chakra, known as the heart chakra. Gems and stones of a lime green color are said to be connected to this chakra, and are said to help focus our energies on healing. Because of this connection to the heart, it is possible that wearing prasiolite near your heart can promote this aspect. Perhaps a prasiolite necklace would be the best item of jewelry to get this particular benefit. In the metaphysical realm, prasiolite is said to promote the connection between the spirit and the body.
I have come across some really fantastic specimens of prasiolite over the years, and I have to say I love working with prasiolite. I’ve found that prasiolite pairs well with both sterling silver as well as gold, but I personally prefer the look of prasiolite with gold. It’s a little bit more unexpected to me. My favorite prasiolite item is this gold-filled handcrafted prasiolite cluster necklace. This lovely handmade gemstone necklace features a stunning marquis cut prasiolite gem flanked with a stunning chalcedony drop and a freshwater petal pearl. Actually, I love this handmade prasiolite necklace so much that it's in my own personal jewelry stash.
Prasiolite is a beautiful, rare, and affordable gemstone that I have really come to love, so stay tuned! You’ll be seeing more prasiolite in my handmade jewelry collections.
